Well, here we are again. At Ron’s canoe, kayak, boat building social club. We really could do this at home but you meet such interesting and wonderful people here that it is worth building your boat here.

The first step is to mark the centre lines on the stems and fasten on the sheer clamps.

Peter fairs the bow stem.

Now we start the planking, one strip on each side, repeat, repeat.

Bob and David are choosing the strips, matching them in pairs, for their kayaks. That way each side will look the same.

Peter has applied the accent strip and is continuing the planking up, (actually down) the side.

Peter spoke-shaves more of the stem as the planking nears the curve in the bow, making sure the strips will lay flat against it as they come up to it.

As the planking progresses, we must concentrate on one side only since the pieces now interfere with each other where they meet.

Jurek, Peter and David mark the centre line using a taut fish line stretched between two nails driven in the stems beside the centre line.

Peter and David use a sharp chisel to cut the excess wood back to the centre line.
