Daisuke is the fourth visitor from Japan to be building with us. Because canoe building is very graphic and many of the words associated with the process are nouns, we actually get along very well.At this early stage, Daisuke knows the terminology of the mold structure and is shown here laying out lines on the bow stem.

この工房でカヌーを作る日本人は、彼、大介で４人目だ。
カヌー作りは専門用語の理解がしづらいし本だけではわかりにくいが、実際に一緒に
作るととてもわかりやすい。

His name-to answer a question by email-is pronounced "die-uh-skay". Thankfully, his grasp of English is way beyond my Japanese. Just after doing the lines layout, he told me it was not so difficult-just that I work in inches and he generally uses metric measurements.

日本人以外の方のために書いておくが、「大介」は " die-uh-skay "と発音する。
幸い、彼の英語能力は私の日本語能力よりもはるかに高い。
長さを「インチ」で測るカナダと「メートル」で測る日本との違いはあるが、配置は
さほど難しくなかったようだ。

In English, we often say that a simple task is "a piece of cake". The Japanese equivalent is "asa mieshe mei" which translates as "done before breakfast". He told me that fairing the stems with the spokeshave is not as simple as it looked in photos!

我々は簡単な作業のことをよく「ケーキ一切れ」と言うが、日本ではそれを「朝飯
前」と表すそうだ。
しかし船首を南京鉋（なんきんがんな）で削って整えるのは、写真で見るほど簡単
じゃない！というのが彼の感想である。

南京鉋で船首がきれいな流線型になったら、次は長い赤杉材の出番だ。

One of the early tasks is to attach the SHEER CLAMPS to the station molds. These larer become the connecting part between the hull and deck.

型にクランプを取り付ける。これが後に、船体とデッキの結合する部分となる。

The sheer clamp actually becomes part of the deck so by covering it with clear tape, it is isolated and no glue can cause it to stick to the strips.

クリアテープを使ってクランプを接着剤から保護する。クランプはデッキ側の部品な
ので、船体とくっつかないようにしなければならないのだ。

The first rows of bead and cove strips are being added.

そして長い赤杉材を取り付けていく。

Some time later, with about 10 rows of strips attached, it was time for Daisuke to shape the stem to hold more strips .

１０本ほど取り付けたら、残りの取り付けがうまくいくように船首を一旦鉋で調整す
る。

The fairing batten is used to check that the shaping of the stem is accurate.

削り具合を確かめるにはまっすぐな板を当ててみるといい。
