All of the canoes and kayaks start with a set of plans-it does take some time to get used to "reading" them and then to determine the sequencing of the operations to be followed.

So, we had Ray,working with Jurek Okon, start by making a set of stem bending jigs which would allow us to produce stems well ahead of setting up the molds.

The plans took me some time to figure out. It's a good thing that Ron was there to explain it to me.

It was exciting to finally put the molds on the strongback. I could start to see the outline of a canoe at this point

This was a crucial point of installing the molds as they had to be completely squared and centered on the strongback. Variances of an eighth of an inch could potentially affect the shape of the canoe

At this stage, a strip of cedar if nailed onto the mold to center and stabilize each mold. It will be removed after several strips are placed on the mold.

After a short but interesting lesson on using the spokeshave, I set out trimming the outer stem to accommodate the strips. The strips must lay flush with the outer stem. This was not as easy as it looks because I was nervous I would trim too much off. Fortunately, I did ok.

Using the fairing batten helped in determining how much wood to carve as well as the angle to cut.

The first strip! The plans call for installing the first strip at the 'knuckle line' as opposed to the shear line. It will be interesting to see how the strips lay at the curves below.
