CANOE KIT MATERIALS

and

C.N.C. Cut STATION MOLDS

If you are building a canoe from plans produced by the Bear Mountain Boat Shop,then the kit items described here will be quite appropriate for your project.

Over the years, we have built most of the canoes featured in Ted Moores' CANOECRAFT and our products work. In the image above, you can see a 16' Prospector about half planked up.

Below, the same canoe is seen with the bottom strips - much shorter at this point- closing over one side of the midline.

The strips are made of western red cedar; they are FULL LENGTH (to 20') and CLEAR. The grain structure is VERTICAL GRAIN on the flat faces--essential for ease of shaping and sanding. The strips arrive in bundles of EIGHT STRIPS all of which came from one plank and are taped together exactly as they lay in the original board.

The strips measure 1/4" (6 mm) x 13/16 " x 16-20 feet long. There are 64 strips in a package; large girth canoes (Prospector and Nomad) will require one extra bundle of 8 strips.

(tube is 6" diameter x 18' long--holds up to 70 strips, gunwale set, stem stock, stem bands and a shoe keel)

Each strip built watercraft is going to be unique and that aspect will be a reflection of both the available strips and the patterning of those strips. It is possible to add to the overall look of the craft by using some very distinct full length strips or geometric patterns.

If accuracy is what you want, consider a set of these station molds- we cut every model in the Bear Mountain catalogue. Each mold has the vertical midline and 4" reference waterline engraved along with the station mold number.
